Specialist Punch Metal Facade Installation (Perforated Metal)
A punch metal facade is a perforated metal skin that simultaneously acts as a sunshade, a visual filter, a graphic element and a second skin. It is widely used in office and commercial towers, multi-story parking structures, double-skin facades and urban projects.
1Applications
- Second skin for solar control and reduced thermal load
- Cladding of parking structures and service areas
- Screening of unsightly services
- Graphic and identity facades (logos, bespoke patterns)
- Attractive nighttime backlighting behind the panels
2Materials
- Aluminum (lightweight, corrosion-resistant, ideal for powder coating)
- Galvanized steel (cost-effective)
- Stainless steel (for special projects)
- Corten steel where a controlled rusted look is required
3CNC Punch Metal — Bespoke Patterns & Gradients
In CNC punch metal, the perforation pattern is produced by a CNC machine; instead of the traditional uniform pattern, each panel can carry the project's own bespoke pattern — a logo, a graphic motif, geometric designs or a gradient — on the face of the facade. This is what separates an ordinary perforated skin from a signature facade.
In a gradient pattern, the perforation density changes gradually: denser at the bottom of the facade (more shade) and more open at the top (wider views) — a blend of energy performance and beauty that is verified with our daylight simulation before fabrication.
- Pattern design with open-area control of 15 to 45 percent for the balance of light, view and strength
- Double-sided panels for views from both directions
- Combining punch metal with decorative metal ceilings at entrances — a unified design language for facade and ceiling
- Full coordination with second skins, louvers and facade lighting
4Substructure & Connection Details
- A grid substructure of vertical and horizontal profiles
- Connection of the substructure to the main structure with adjustable brackets
- Panel connection design (screws, rails, concealed systems) that is both serviceable and visually clean
- Provision of the right distance between the punch metal skin and the main skin for ventilation and thermal performance
5Advantages
- Solar control and reduced heat gain
- Partial visual privacy without losing daylight or views
- Strong visual identity with bespoke patterns (ideal for project branding)
- Low weight versus masonry skins and fast installation
- High weather resistance with electrostatic powder coating
- Can be combined with glass, composite and other facade systems
Custom execution detail
Perforation density in this pattern is graded: the closer to the centre, the larger the holes. The design is both an aesthetic statement and a precise light and heat control tool.
Part-by-part notes:
- 13 to 4 mm aluminium sheet CNC-punched — hole diameter and density are generated from a parametric file; the pattern must follow standard perforations (round/hexagonal) so the sheet does not pucker.
- 2Perimeter frame (edge fold) + colour-matched fixing screws — the corner screws carry the mechanical load; bare, uncoated screws on a light facade leave permanent staining.
- 3Spacer between the skin and the substructure — this gap is what makes it a second skin: in summer hot air rises inside it and is exhausted before reaching the glass; cooling demand drops by up to 15%.
- 4Galvanised steel or aluminium substructure with a complete anti-corrosion system — wherever steel would touch aluminium directly, a separating pad must be used, otherwise galvanic corrosion takes hold.
- 5Primary facade behind the skin (glass or another material) — the design must allow access for washing the facade behind the skin, otherwise maintenance becomes prohibitively expensive.
