Design & Installation of Modern Hybrid and Double-Skin Facades

In many of today's projects, the final facade is a combination of several different materials and systems: glass (curtain wall, spider), dry ceramic, HPL, thermowood, punch metal and expanded metal, exposed concrete or GFRC, and aluminum and steel louvers and sunshades.

In energy- and climate-conscious projects, double-skin facades are used, where a primary skin and a second skin are placed at a defined distance from one another.

Designing and building these facades requires real experience in each individual system and the ability to design the connection details between them.

1Types of Combinations

  • Curtain wall + dry ceramic + thermowood
  • Glass + HPL + aluminum louvers
  • Exposed concrete + glass + metal (punch metal/expanded metal)
  • GFRC + curtain wall + metal second skin
  • Composite + glass + thermowood, and more

2Double-Skin Facades

  • Two facade layers with an air cavity between them
  • Natural or mechanical ventilation of the space between the two skins
  • Louvers, sunshades, punch metal and glass in the second skin to control solar gain, energy and privacy

3Second Skin Types We Build in Double-Skin Facades

Glass Second Skin

  • The most classic double-skin type; maximum transparency with natural ventilation between the two skins
  • Suited to tall office towers with no directly openable windows to the outside

Punch Metal & Expanded Metal Second Skin

  • Light and view filtering with a bespoke pattern — even the project's own graphic motif
  • The lightest and most economical second skin; becomes a signature feature with nighttime lighting

Teardrop Louver & Aluminum Sunshade Second Skin

  • Fixed or motorized movable louvers with automation and light/wind sensors
  • Precise solar control at every hour of the day — a serious reduction in cooling load

Thermowood & Warm-Material Second Skin

  • The warmth of thermowood combined with glass — a distinctive identity for hotels and cultural spaces
  • Can be combined with punch metal and dry ceramic on a single facade

4Double-Skin in Iran's Climate — Real Opportunity or Added Luxury?

In Iran's hot, sunny climate, the second skin is exactly where it pays off most: blocking direct solar radiation before it reaches the primary glass means a real reduction in cooling load during peak electricity hours. Experience from executed double-skin projects shows that, with the right details and correct ventilation of the cavity, the payback in energy savings is entirely real.

But double-skin does not necessarily mean heavy cost: a simple curtain wall combined with a punch metal or aluminum louver second skin is the economical version of the same performance. Our technical office provides several scenarios with transparent estimates based on the city's climate, the facade orientations and the budget, so the client can decide with full clarity.

5Maintenance & Access in Double-Skin Facades

  • Design of access routes between the two skins (rope-access grid, service platforms) from day one of design
  • Provision for periodic washing of both skins with specialty materials
  • Control of dust and pollution in the cavity in dry climates
  • A documented maintenance plan — part of our after-handover services

6Technical Notes

  • Connection details between different systems (glass-ceramic, glass-thermowood, HPL-metal, concrete-curtain wall, etc.)
  • Design of control joints and sliding connections for the differential thermal expansion of materials
  • Design of waterproofing and drainage paths at system junctions
  • Design of access and maintenance routes, especially in double-skin and second-skin facades

Custom execution detail

A double skin is a 'facade inside a facade': the inner skin is a true curtain wall, the outer skin a louvre or perforated metal screen, with a moving air corridor in between. Iran's hot climate is the perfect arena for this system.

Double-skin facade detail — cavity between the inner and outer skins

Part-by-part notes:

  • 1Complete inner curtain-wall skin, fully sealed and insulated — this skin is responsible for water, air and energy; the outer skin is no substitute for it.
  • 230 to 100 cm air corridor — in summer hot air rises and is exhausted at the top edge; cooling load reductions of up to 20% on south/west facades.
  • 3Outer skin of spindle louvres or perforated metal — controls direct solar radiation; the lighter the skin colour, the lower the absorbed heat. Operable blades are fully justified energetically in office buildings.
  • 4Intermediate brackets and a service walkway — on towers, a washing and maintenance route is designed inside the air corridor; a double skin with no maintenance access is a false economy.
  • 5Transoms and double glazing on the inner skin — the main thermal performance comes from this skin; Low-E glass + argon fill is the usual choice for premium projects.

Execution steps

  1. 1Architectural analysis and project objectives (aesthetics, energy, privacy, branding)
  2. 2Proposal of hybrid and/or double-skin facade concepts
  3. 3Design development of inter-system connection details and substructures
  4. 4Estimate and phasing of execution
  5. 5Execution of multiple facade systems under a single management
