Specialist HPL Cladding Installation
HPL (High Pressure Laminate) panels are densely layered sheets specifically engineered for exterior building facades. Thanks to their wide range of colors and patterns, good strength and dry installation, HPL facades are especially popular in office, commercial, educational and healthcare projects.
1Applications
- Office and headquarters buildings
- Commercial and retail centers
- Educational and healthcare facilities
- Mixed facades alongside glass, metal, thermowood and dry ceramic
2Advantages
- Extensive variety of colors and patterns (plain, metallic, wood-grain, stone-look, etc.)
- Good resistance to impact and abrasion
- Relatively low weight and dry installation
- Possibility of local replacement and repair
3Technical Notes
- Design of aluminum or galvanized steel substructures
- Selection of fixing system: visible screws or concealed clips and hardware
- Observing expansion gaps between panels to control thermal movement
- Design of waterproofing and joint details
- Option to install thermal insulation behind the HPL in ventilated facade systems
Custom execution detail
Exterior HPL is not the same as the interior grade used for signage: it must be EN 438-7 (facade grade), otherwise it fades and buckles within the first two years.
Part-by-part notes:
- 18 mm exterior HPL sheet (EN 438-7) — thermoset resin core with a UV-stable acrylic surface; cut edges must be sealed so moisture cannot reach the core.
- 2Aluminium rivets/clips with oval holes — the oval hole lets the sheet expand thermally; a tight rivet in a round hole = sheet failure under temperature cycling.
- 3Aluminium profile or treated-timber substructure — aluminium for towers and damp locations; rail spacing follows the sheet stiffness (usually 50 cm maximum).
- 4Ventilated cavity behind the sheet — HPL is a vapour barrier; without rear ventilation, trapped moisture causes bowing and waviness. The bottom and top vents must stay open.
- 5Slab/roof edge with full waterproofing — water must never find its way behind the HPL, otherwise staining collects at the bottom of the sheets.
