Specialist Exposed Concrete Facade Installation
Exposed concrete is a facade in which the concrete itself is the final, visible surface. It is one of the signatures of minimalist and industrial architecture and is used in modern office, commercial, cultural, educational and residential projects.
1System Types
- Precast exposed concrete panels
- In-situ (cast-in-place) exposed concrete
- GFRC panels with an exposed concrete look
2Advantages
- Minimal, industrial look with strong identity
- High durability
- Combines with glass, metal and wood
- Ability to create various textures and patterns on the surface and in the tie-hole and joint layout
3Technical Notes
In the Precast System
- Design of panel dimensions, anchors, plates and mechanical connections
- Design of steel substructures and adjustable brackets
- Joint pointing and waterproofing of joints
In the In-Situ System
- Selection of formwork type (timber, steel, fiberglass) and its surface quality
- Use of standard form-release oil
- Control of mix design, water-cement ratio and curing
- Cutting of control joints where required
In Both Systems
- Design of rainwater drainage paths to prevent staining and streaking
- Use of sealers and protective coatings to reduce water absorption and soiling
Custom execution detail
Exposed concrete cannot be repaired: every texture and stain is permanent. All formwork details must be finalised before the pour.
Part-by-part notes:
- 1Exposed surface with a board-formed texture — for a linear texture, moisture-conditioned MDF boards or European phenolic-faced plywood are used; the form oil must be colourless and non-staining.
- 2Tie holes — their position and pattern must be designed on the architectural drawing; after striking the formwork the holes are filled with colour-matched mortar and sanded flush.
- 3Vertical form joints — joints must be straight and regular; a ragged joint on exposed concrete is like a scratch across a masterpiece.
- 4Nano protective coating (hydrophobic and anti-stain) — with no change to the appearance; it blocks water and stain ingress and multiplies the visual service life of the concrete. Reapply every 5 to 8 years.
AI & analytical tools
- Simulation of the joint pattern and panel layout on the project volume
- Smart cost estimate based on area, system type (precast/in-situ), height and the expected surface quality
Execution steps
- 1Architectural analysis and selection of the right exposed concrete system (precast/in-situ)
- 2Design of panel dimensions and the joint grid
- 3Substructure and connection design (in the precast system)
- 4Panel production or in-situ casting
- 5Installation, adjustment, joint pointing and waterproofing
- 6Protective coating application and handover
