Decorative Aluminum Metal Ceilings: Stretch Metal or Punch Metal?

Why have decorative metal ceilings (stretch metal, punch metal, aluminum baffles) become the star of lobbies and atriums? A comparison of the systems, lighting, access to services and cost — plus the execution details that decide the final quality.

The ceiling is the building's fifth facade — the first surface a guest sees in the entrance and the lobby. In recent years, decorative aluminum metal ceilings have taken the place of mineral-fiber and gypsum ceilings in flagship spaces: they are lighter, far more durable, they do not crack or shed, and they can be designed specifically for the project rather than picked from a catalog.

Stretch metal (expanded metal) is a three-dimensional mesh stretched from a single sheet — with no seams and no welds — and for atriums and high ceilings with backlighting it is unmatched. Punch metal is a perforated sheet with a regular pattern or a CNC design, suited to corridors, entrances and anywhere acoustics and uniformity matter. Aluminum baffles create a modern linear rhythm, while aluminum lay-in tiles give full access to the services above.

Three execution details decide the final quality. First, an engineered suspension — threaded rods and brackets with a load calculation, not improvised wire hangers. Second, laser leveling of the grid: a wavy ceiling is completely visible from the floor. Third, an access system over the service points — a ceiling that has to be demolished to service a duct was simply not designed.

Lighting is half of a metal ceiling's beauty: linear LED between the baffles, backlighting behind stretch metal for a depth effect, and recessed spotlights in the tiles. Our recommendation is to design the ceiling and the lighting together — never to bolt the light on after execution.

On cost: measured against heavy decorative ceilings (plasterwork, solid wood), and once durability and the absence of periodic repairs are counted, the metal ceiling is the more economical choice for public spaces. Area, system type and substructure complexity are the three main pricing factors. At Namakaran Fakher Engineering Co., decorative metal ceilings are designed, engineered and executed as one package.
