Glass Handrail Guide: Fix Pond, Stigmat, Flush-Mount & CNC
From fix-pond handrails and German-style (Stigmat) systems to embedded and surface-mounted installation and CNC metal handrails — the differences between the systems, the right glass for each, and how to choose for a lobby, staircase, balcony or pool.
A handrail — the modern railing — plays three roles at once: safety, wayfinding and beauty. In today's luxury projects, frameless glass handrails and stainless systems have displaced the traditional metal railing, because they keep the view open, let light pass through, and harmonize with any architectural style, from classic to minimal.
The most widely used systems: the fix-pond (point-fixed) handrail with stainless point connections for tower terraces and balconies; the German-style handrail (Stigmat) with a grab bar on steel posts for lobbies and staircases; and two ways of mounting the base posts — embedded (set into the slab, the cleanest connection, specific to the construction phase) and surface-mounted (flange and rawl bolts onto the finished floor, specific to renovation).
The newest trend in the market is the CNC metal handrail: metal panels cut with a design exclusive to the project — a logo, a perforated pattern — used instead of glass or alongside it. It has become the visual signature of lobbies and storefronts; combined with concealed LED lighting and a gold or rose-gold PVD finish, it is now the first choice of luxury spaces.
Two safety points that are usually ignored: first, handrail glass must be tempered laminated (8+8 or 10+10) — tempered glass alone falls out completely when it breaks, which is why we do not recommend it for handrails. Second, the embedded base connection to the slab must be waterproofed and sealed, so that water never finds its way to the floor below.
To choose correctly, weigh three parameters together: the phase of the project (new build or renovation), the use of the space (lobby, terrace, pool — a pool demands 316 stainless steel) and the architectural style. At Namakaran Fakher Engineering Co., every type of handrail is executed with our in-house technical office and dedicated shop drawings.
