Facade Louvers & Aluminum Teardrop Blades: Sun Control Guide
How do teardrop louvers, motorized operable louvers and aluminum sunshades cut energy consumption while making the facade more attractive? A selection guide to blade type, the right angle for each orientation, and automation.
The facade louver is contemporary architecture's answer to the Iranian sun: orderly blades that filter the radiation before it ever reaches the glass. The result is a genuine reduction in the cooling load, elimination of glare, and visual privacy — without giving up daylight or the view.
The common types: the teardrop louver with oval aluminum blades — the first choice of office towers and hotels; flat and Z-shaped metal louvers — economical and robust, widely used for second skins and parking structures; and motorized operable louvers that angle themselves with light sensors and can even be connected to the building's BMS.
One technical point matters more than any other: the optimal blade angle is different for each facade orientation. A south-facing facade is controlled with horizontal shading; the east and west facades need vertical louvers. A single angle applied to every orientation is a common mistake that damages both energy performance and the architecture.
In double-skin facades, the louver is the professional's second skin: the combination of a glass curtain wall with a teardrop louver or punch metal delivers energy performance and visual identity at the same time. It is exactly these combinations that separate a facade that merely looks modern from one that is genuinely engineered.
For operable louvers, the serviceable detail is key: replacing a motor should never require opening the entire band. Our team delivers the sun-path analysis, the recommended blade type and angle for every orientation, and complete execution with automation — all in one package. Namakaran Fakher Engineering Co. handles louvers from analysis to handover.
